Is there ANYTHING good about Hedda? Well, I wouldn't say there was anything in particular that's good about her, but I do want to point out that she's human. And even though she calls herself a "coward", I think that in a lot of ways Hedda is truly brave. I mean, she's mad that Thea and Lovborg have this great manusript, and instead of just sitting there feeling jealous and pathetic, she decides to burn the thing! Hedda also has the bravery to try and take control of the things going on around her, using her pistols as means to power. Even though Hedda fails at taking control of her life (like when Brack takes her pistols from her) she at least tried. Instead of sitting around and letting other people tell her how her life is going to go, she tries to fight for that power. However, I'm not going to say that she was as courageous as Thea, or as courageous as she could have possibly been, because I think that killing herself was her greatest act of cowardice. And laziness. I mean, she caused this huge mess for herself (burning the manuscript, telling Lovborg to kill himself with her pistol) and then she just says, "oops, I can't fix it. I'll just kill myself." Sad.

I do not really see any good within Hedda's character. I guess she does have some sort of control in her life after she loses her own as she controls the other characters. I think Hedda's character is sad because she causes so much conflict which ultimately leads to her death...but, I would have to agree and say Hedda is only human!!!

I agree with your point that she is human and as I mentioned in my blog...what would I do if i was walking in her shoes? its very easy to go on and say "she's eveil, and this and that" but really how do we measure being good in a world were the bad ruled and to survive one needs to be on top of the rest!!!!

Very true. I never saw any redeeming qualities about her but she does have a perserverance that makes the play last for four acts instead of one or two. It is sad that she created elaborate ploys, counter ploys and the like to try to stay on top, and then the unexpected happens and the entire life goes away and is replaced by servitude. REally is quite sad that the power of a human being is not measured by how great they are at making plans, but by how well the conduct themselves when the plans fall through. For that rason, Hedda is not a great character and I still feel that she is a coward in the end.
